General Questions

What is is a local search platform and syndication network focusing on the event and entertainment industry. What this means is that we provide information about "places to go and things to do" within a geographical area. In addition, we syndicate our content and listings to other websites and applications.

What cities can I access on 49st? is available in hundreds of cities across North America. We are located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and our focus is currently on the Canadian market. That being said, we cover hundreds of cities in the United States as well. Chances are that you will find us in all major cities and many smaller ones. Simply select the change location button to search for your city or visit our cities page.

Why is it called 49st? How did you come up with the name?

There are a few reasons. We wanted something short, memorable and different. When we registered the domain many years ago (in 1999), it was uncommon to see numbers in domain names, hence the 49. We envisioned a site that could act as a virtual "street" and offer users the ability to visit virtual "storefronts" (eg. events, venues, restaurants) in their search to find out what's going on in their city.

How long has 49st been around? How did it begin and where is it going?

We began in 1999 as an event marketing company, creating and managing events. Since our beginnings, we have migrated the business once into new media (content aggregator) and again more recently into a local search company (with a focus on the event and entertainment space).

How does work? What kind of information can I get?

On 49st you can:

  • Find popular local venues, upcoming concerts, sporting events, festivals, tickets and much more!
  • Add your events and venue listings to our database for free.
  • Promote your listings to our growing community.
  • Add our content to your site for free (See Content Syndication).
Are there any paying advertisers on 49st?

Yes. We display advertisements on our listing pages (indicated as "Sponsored Links"), display ads and features. Learn more about advertising options available on 49st.

Personalization and Membership

Can I set a default location on

Yes. Change your location to your desired city by clicking the "change location" link at the top right corner of your screen or by visiting our cities page. By setting your city, 49st will remember and always display it when you return. The site also remembers your last five selected locations (your browser cookie must be enabled) so it's easy to quickly connect to your favorite cities without having to search.

Do I need to become a member (register) to surf

No. You may browse and search our content without registering for an account. However, there are certain functions (such as submitting content) where membership is required (as a measure of quality control). There is no cost to register, it's FREE.

Is there a fee to become a member?

No. Membership is FREE, so what are you waiting for? Register now and get connected to what's going on in your city!

Do you sell user information gathered through the site?

We do not sell or rent personal information gathered through We never have nor ever will. We follow privacy laws and respect your privacy.

Content Submission

What content can I submit?

Currently you can submit event and venue listings. Our submission form is easy and quick to use - whether you submit one listing or hundreds.

Who can submit content to

We encourage all members of to submit content to our site. Benefits include exposure to our community so you attract more people, and other users benefit from it knowing about things going on around town of interest to them. You do not need to be a venue or event owner to submit content on 49st. There's a lot going on in every city and we appreciate our members helping us out!

How do I submit content?

To avoid duplicate content, please ensure that your content is already not listed in by using our search functionality. If your content is not already added to our database, please visit the add content page and select the type of content you would like to add. We encourage you to add as much information as you can - such as images and complete descriptions.

Is there a charge to submit content?

No. Adding content to is FREE! However, we do offer advertising options for those interested in.

Why do people submit content to

Our members add content to:

  • Help others find out what's going on their community.
  • Promote their event, venue or restaurant to increase awareness and drive traffic
  • Get listed on the major search engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc)
  • Because we have a captive audience - people visit looking for places to go and things to do
I emailed my event to but it's still not on your site. When will you add it?

We do not post any listings that are emailed. We welcome user-generated listings, however it is up to the user to submit it using our forms. If you have a large number of upcoming events please contact us to discuss your requirements.

I submitted my listing but when I search for it, it doesn't appear. Why is this?

All listing submissions are reviewed by a content editor and must be approved before being published “live”. You will be notified (via email) once it has been approved and is live.

Why is my listing not being approved?

To ensure high quality content, 49st has strict content guidelines. You will also be provided with reason(s), as well as instructions, on what changes are required in order for approval.

Content Editing

I have found my listing on and want to edit it. How do I edit my listing?

In order to edit a listing you must first take "ownership" of your listing. See the next FAQ for instructions on doing this.

How do I take "ownership" of my listing?
  • Option A) If your listing is not currently "owned" by anyone, you can take "ownership" by clicking the link located under the social networking sites that says "This is your listing? Enhance your listing." After doing so, you will have to sign in (so we know you're a legitimate user) and then select the "Edit your listing." button in order to begin editing and enhancing your listing.
  • Option B) If your listing is currently "owned" by someone, you can either select the "Something doesn't look right?." button or contact us. We will ensure the correct "owner" has access to their listing.
How accurate is your information?

At 49st we take quality control very seriously. It is our mission to have accurate information on our site at all times! We have put several quality control measures in place, and our content editors review content on an ongoing basis.

Why can I see the edits I made but others can’t?

Once you have edited content it is reviewed by our content editors. After submitting your changes, you, and only you, will be able to view the changes to that particular listing. Once the changes have been approved everyone will be able to see your updates.

Promoting your Events & Venue

How can I promote my event or venue?

The first step to promote your venue or event on 49st is to "take Ownership" of your listing. If your venue or event is not already listed on 49st, you should add it to 49st. After taking ownership, you can enhance your listing by adding images, description and more. To further promote your listing, you may advertise 49st and our Syndication Partner Network.

How can I become an advertiser on 49st? How can I find out more about your offering?

We offer a variety of ways for you to reach our community in order to increase awareness and drive traffic to your event and/or business. Visit our advertise page for more information.

How do I know how many people saw my event or venue listing?

Once you “own” a listing (this is achieved either when adding a new listing or by ‘taking control’ of an existing listing) you automatically get access to free statistics. We call this 49st Insights, and they provide information about how many people searched for, clicked on and saw your event — in real time!

You can access your Insights from your ‘My Street’ Page or from the ‘View Insight Statistics’ link that is added on the right side of listing pages you own. If you want to increase the number of people who see your event or venue, you can simply use our promote service to advertise your listing in premium locations on our site and/or those of our partners.

Content Syndication

What is Content Syndication?

Content Syndication is where 49st makes its content available to other websites and applications. Our Syndicate Partners integrate 49st's content to display to their users - thereby adding value and increasing advertising revenue. Our content can be filtered and customized to suit Partner requirements.

How can I integrate 49st content to my site?

We offer two types of integration solutions:

  1. API - 49st offers an Application Programming Interface (API) that Partners can use to display information on their site. For details, please visit our API documentation .
