The Athenaeum can always be counted on to provide a diversity of shows, from musicals to dance numbers to straight dramatic productions. The larger and touring productions are often staged in the roomy main floor theater, while smaller shows are usually staged in one of the less-roomy and more bare-bones studio theaters.
One of the theater companies that call this location home, it's carved out a valuable musical niche over the last few seasons with its less-is-more revivals of William Finn and James Lapine's "Falsettos" and, most recently, Stephen Sondheim's "Merrily We Roll Along." These intimate revivals profited from the immediacy of the tiny Athenaeum upstairs studio.
